It’s like a giant puzzle. Except that it isn’t fun. And you have to do it. Probably more than once. One of the most annoying parts about moving is the disassembling and reassembling of furniture. Obviously, not all furniture can or needs to be disassembled. Usually, it is the Ikea-style furniture that has become more ubiquitous in the last 15 years that needs to be taken apart before it is placed in the truck. As anyone who has experience with Ikea can tell you, the assembly can be a frustrating experience. But, it is necessary and therefore, we are going to give you some tips on how to make your life easier. Take a look:
Does It Really Need To Be Disassembled?
That’s the first question you want to ask. Don’t assume it has to happen. Look at the piece, perhaps even measure it, and really consider if the time it takes to take it apart and then put it back together is worth the space you may be saving. Space vs. Time; what is more valuable to you?
Get Help
Don’t do it yourself; have someone act as a wingman. Whether they are holding the screws and tools or actively taking pieces apart, a second person will make the process seem easier and smoother. Plus, a second brain can help solve problems that will inevitably arise.
Keep It Together
Put all the screws and fasteners in a plastic bag and don’t lose it! As well, label all of the parts of the furniture in case the pieces are separated. If you are disassembling more than one piece of furniture, the labels will save you from a headache later. Do your best to keep the pieces together. The only thing worse than re-assembling furniture is playing Hide-and-Go-Seek with the pieces.
Use Moving Blankets
Even if disassembled, furniture can still get scratched and become scuffed. Avoid this by using plenty of packing material and moving blankets. If something does get scratched, it might be possible to reverse the panel when re-assembling.
Don’t Worry About Manuals
Can’t find the manual from 2007? Don’t worry; everything is online now. You can probably find a PDF of the manual somewhere online.
